Publishing information on the World Wide Web (WWW) is a perplexing issue to the majority of people who are new to the Internet. It is a completely different means of presenting information from traditional media. We would like to highlight some of these differences, and explain our approach to publishing information on the WWW. Content creators for almost every other publishing medium have a luxury not available to the Web Publisher. The layout of the printed page can be precisely determined; choice of font and the size of text, image colours and positioning can all be controlled. A Web author does not have that same peace of mind. There is only one person who has the ultimate control over a page of information on the Internet and that is the person accessing it and looking at it. Yes! This Means You. You control how this page looks (though perhaps you may not realize it). How can we make this strange assertion? Surely Web Publishers can determine how a page looks?... WRONG! There is a multitude of different browsing situations. Just take a quick look at a questionnaire of some of the factors influencing how a page appears.
We are responsible Web Authors because we accept that the viewer has the ultimate control over the information that we publish on your behalf, not us. Our purpose and aim is to make your information accessible to as wide an audience on the Internet as possible. We do this by creating pages that are, as far as possible, device independent and portable.
A portable Web page will render itself sensibly to the viewer's choice of factors such as monitor size, screen resolution, window size and browser preferences. This allows the visitor to view the content in the manner he or she prefers, and is one of the marvels of this medium. Most importantly, the viewer is given a good feeling about the page and you, the supplier. They will have found what they came for... information, presented to their screen (or ears) effortlessly, and with respect to their choices.
The Internet is a marvellous tool, totally reflecting freedom of choice. Your choice and freedom to publish, the viewer's choice of where they look and the freedom of how they view. We respect, cherish and continue to nurture the ideals of the Internet and we hope that we have succeeded in giving you an insight into the workings of the World Wide Web.
